about

M Dougherty (b. 1991, Los Angeles, CA) is a nonbinary, multidisciplinary artist and researcher whose work bridges the realms of art and science, using scent as a medium to explore the convergence of technology, humanity, and the natural world. M’s practice, while deeply rooted in scientific inquiry, is also profoundly personal, reflecting an introspective engagement with the senses.

Through installations, performances, and creative technologies, M constructs immersive olfactory experiences that transport audiences into new sensory landscapes. Their acclaimed installation /ForestBath, developed during the pandemic, brought the essence of the forest to the streets of New York City, offering the physiological and psychological benefits of nature to people isolated from these environments. This work highlights the transformative power of scent in enhancing human well-being, particularly when access to natural spaces is limited.

A passionate advocate for olfactory literacy, M is dedicated to enhancing our collective ability to perceive, understand, and communicate the intricate nuances of scent. Their work in scent science includes contributions to SmellRS, a device designed for evaluating human olfaction, as well as the development of tools aimed at preserving memory, an effort deeply informed by their personal connection to Alzheimer's research. This unique integration of science and art reflects M’s forward-thinking approach to cognitive health, using sensory experiences to reshape our relationship with memory.

As a sought-after speaker and guest lecturer, M shares their expertise at workshops and institutions worldwide. They have held a residency at Boston University, where their research on olfaction intersected with creative practice, further deepening their commitment to advancing the field. Their work has been showcased internationally, including at renowned venues such as Olfactory Art Keller and François Ghebaly Gallery.

M’s contributions to olfactory art and research have earned them numerous accolades, including the Innovation Award from NYC Media Lab and Chanel. As a former member of the Board of Directors for OSMOCOSM, a global machine olfaction conference hosted at MIT, M has helped push the boundaries of scent technology and art. Through the seamless fusion of scientific rigor and creative expression, M Dougherty continues to challenge the possibilities of what scent can communicate, inviting us all to engage more deeply with the rich, often overlooked, olfactory dimension of our lives.
